What is the Difference Between Spirits and Liqueurs?

Applejack Liqueur

Spirits are produced by the concentration of alcohol in a fermenting liquid through a distillation process. While liqueurs are created from spirits that have been sweetened and flavored. The concentration of alcohol is normally between 37% and 43% for spirits compared with 12% for table wines. Spirits are often used in cocktails as a base, although they were often used as a form of medicine, originally.

In general, the foundations of spirit drinks are fruit, grain or vegetable or any high sugar content plant. In grain spirits, the initial fermentation converts starch into sugar which is then fermented. Some labeled spirits can only be created from one source, while other spirits can be produced form different plants. For example, vodka can be made with from grain, potato or even sugarcane. Brandy, on the other hand, can only be made only from grapes.

Cognac, Armagnac, Brandy, Grappa, Pisco and Trebbiano grapes are examples of the spirit based on different regions with different types of grapes as the base. Calvados is an apple-based spirit known as applejack in North America.

Scotch Whiskey and Spirits of cereals are based, Scotch whiskey is a whiskey that contains a mixture of more than a distillation, usually malt whiskey and grain whiskey. A single malt scotch whiskey whiskey is the original was produced from barley and distilled.

Rum is the most popular distilled alcoholic beverage and typically became increasingly grown sugar cane, which is the basis of molasses or sometimes can be used. Depending on the method is still used, or patent pot determines whether or white rum is darker.

Gin is typically a compound spirit of juniper, coriander, and citrus and brandy is distilled from grain or potatoes and flavored with caraway or anise.

Liqueurs are generally divided into four categories, which are the spirits of milk, bean or kernel liquor, liquor herb and fruit liqueurs. Spirits are more commonly known as names such as Bailey's Irish Cream, Crème de menthe, Kahlua, Amaretto, Sloe Gin, Galliano, Southern Comfort or Grand Marnier, for example. These are popular liqueurs are often used in cocktails, but also you can drink for themselves.

The main difference when it comes of spirits and liqueurs is that they are the same except for the flavor and sweetness that is characterized by a liqueur. When it comes to drinking, leading to a higher alcohol content wine and beer, because the concentration of the distillation process or capitalization. Usually mixed with juice and additional flavors to complement your base.

Both spirits and liqueurs can be added to some dishes in the kitchen and Jack Daniels grilled items are popular in many American menus, with a marinade or sauce base whiskey barbecue. Another popular dish is the tequila lime chicken, which has an international flair and his popularity in Latin menus. The list is endless, but one thing for sure is that the popularity of spirits and liqueurs is international and personal tastes have a wide variety of products to choose.

Absinthe Verte and Absinthe Verdoyante

Absinthe Verte

Absinthe Verte

Handcrafted Absinthe Verte is prepared by following the traditions of European Master Distillers of the 19th century. One starts with aromatic eau-de-vie, placing it in little 150 liters pots of copper. Then the traditional Absinthe Verte herbs are carefully to added: Anise, Grande Wormwood, sweet fennel, along with a number of proprietary botanicals.

The herbs are gently distilled to a high alcoholic content, catching the scents and essential oils that are in the heart of hand selected flowers and herbs. These herbs are grown and harvested in the fields of Spain, France and Western Europe. The unmistakable aroma of these peaceful European meadows are captured in every bottle of our Absinthe Verte.

Before Verte Absinthe is bottled, it must undergo a “coloring” step. Many commercial absinthes use artificial color. But the best absinthe gets its color in the most traditional way, by placing hand-selected herbs – hyssop, Melissa, and Roman Wormwood wrapped in a gauze and let to steepin hot mixture of Absinthe Verte. These herbs strengthen the coloring as well as the floral aromas and citrus nuances of the final Absinthe Verte. The result is an Absinthe Verte in a totally natural color, a vibrant green, which is similar to the gemstone, Peridot. This nuance is one of the major reasons why the French Impressionists of the Belle Époque demanded that Absinthe Verte be traditionally prepared by hand.

Absinthe Verdoyante

Absinthe Verdoyante is a more recent addition to the world of fine spirits. It is bitter tasting spirit of anise and fennel with extract of wormwood, coriander and a distillate of other herbs and spices.

There are many Bohemian absinthe recipes for Absinthe Verdoyante less anise is used in its production. It is perhaps for this reason… that Absinthe Verdoyante does not turn milky, or ‘louche’ when water is added. It contains 10 mg/kg of thujone.

Alcohol by volume: 60%
Bottle size: 50cl (16.91 oz)
Thujone: 10 mg / kg

When purchasing absinthe one must shop in Europe for the best Absinthe spirits. There are many Absinthe variations one can choose from: Traditional, Verdoyante, Gold King, Staroplzenecky, King, or Red Absinthe, all made with actual wormwood and natural herbs for great flavor. Become an expert Absinthe by purchasing multiple bottles at once to have a tasting party. Absinthe flavors are subtle and influenced by a variety of factors, including herbs, content alcohol, and the brewing process. With discreet shipping to the U.S. and other nations, we recommend either Absinthesupply.net or Absinthe.bz to purchase your absinthe.

Absinthe Green Fairy Art

absinthe Green Fairy

Green fairy art captured the imagination of the original drinkers of absinthe and for good reason. Green fairy isn’t just another name for absinthe: she is a metaphor for artistic enlightenment and exploration, of poetic inspiration, of a freer state of mind, of new ideas, of a changing social order.

The late 1800′s were a time of great change – the industrial revolution was taking hold – redistributing wealth in a new way. A middle class was forming and while Royalty did not yet know it – kings and queens were on their way out…

To the original bohemians of 1890s Paris, the fairy was a welcomed symbol of transformation. She was the trusted guide en-route to artistic innovation; for absinthe was said to lead to artistic visions.

Today we have been bequeathed a series of absinthe green fairy art that is as beautiful today as when it was first created. Admittedly, much of the art was in the commercial world as the Green fairy was used on posters and advertisement touting the value of Absinthe. But its original use, does not take away from the innate value of green fairy art today.

Absinthe Liquor US

absinthe liquor us

Absinthe has returned to life. After being absent for almost a century, the drink of absinthe is back for public consumption once again. Like other alcoholic beverages, absinthe as a drink is much maligned. Many of the social ills affecting the United States was attributed to absinthe in the early 1900′s. Absinthe imbibers were caught by surprise when the ban was imposed on the beverage in the 20th century.

Why was the absinthe thought to be so dangerous…

Absinthe has had a bad reputation attached to it for a long time. Its use has been said to cause a variety of negative effects. Before being banned, critics complained that it caused seizures, hallucinations and even death. The effects of real absinthe is almost the same as any alcoholic beverage of the same alcohol content.

Much of the blame has to be placed on the way people began to drink absinthe. There is traditionally a time and method to imbibing of this drink. But instead of following this tradition, some began to experiment with their “prescription.” They began to add substances to the drink, itself, without worrying about the consequences. Some of these substances were found to be toxic and dangerous for those who took it. Drinking adulterated absinthe and as well as drinking absinthe in large quantities brought unanticipated misery.

Drinkers started getting seizures. Many people died after taking it. Others were the subject of hallucinations and crazy behavior. The drink eventually was considered totally unsuitable and dangerous to health and well-being of society.

The Revival of Absinthe

Medical science was in a nascent state in 1900, compared with the modern medical knowledge. Facilities for the testing of chemicals were far from advanced as they are now. The ban against absinthe was lifted after suggestions that the drink was not as harmful as previously thought. With modern standards of quality involved, combined with the understanding that it be taken responsibly – means that absinthe is once again “fit to drink. Some changes have been made to the original recipe of the drink.

In early days, the alcohol levels were as high as 75%. This has been significantly reduced, as a measure, to make it safer to drink. Still the effects of drinking absinthe are stronger than most beverages.

It is commonly believed that their are additional effects of drinking absinthe unlike the effects of consuming other alcoholic beverages. This must be because absinthe is essentially an herbal based drink. Many herbs including wormwood, anise, fennel and hyssop go into the manufacture of the drink. These herbs provide flavor and aromatic qualities to the drink as well as some other effects. This makes the drink special and unlike any other. Even a small portion of the drink is enough to let you know you are drinking absinthe….

About the Author: The article is based on how absinthe has emerged from oblivion after being banned for some very wrong reasons. Used as a medicine for stomach ailments absinthe has reached height of popularity.
